What is Animal Abuse?  The Michigan Penal Code identifies abuse as failure to provide adequate care.  Adequate care means sufficient food, water, shelter, sanitary conditions, exercise, and veterinary medical attention to maintain the animal in good health.  Animals are considered neglected if the owner does not adequate provide for it.

Bay County Animal Control Information

Michigan Law requires that all dogs and cats over six months are licensed.  Licenses are due at the time of your rabies vaccination.  For fee information, call Animal Control (989 – 894 – 0679) or the County Treasurer (989 – 895 – 4285).

Michigan Law requires that all animal bites that draw blood are reported.  Contact Animal Control (989 – 894 – 0679).

Stray animals with no collars are held 4 business days.  With a collar but without identification they are kept 7 business days.

Animals surrendered by their owners are available for immediate adoption.

All dogs, cats, and ferrets adopted from the shelter are mandated to be sterilized by an adoption contract.

The Bay County Animal Control Center does NOT sell animals for research.

The shelter puts unwanted animals to sleep by giving an injection of medication that in most cases works very quickly.

Live traps are available for public use.
