How can I help the Humane Society?

The Humane Society is always in need of volunteers for our programs and activities.  We hire no staff and rely upon the citizens of Bay County to help us operate.  Volunteering is the best way to help the Humane Society.

We can also use the following items:

  • First class stamps for mailing letters and rebates.
  • Pre-paid phone cards for returning long-distance calls.
  • Access to a copy machine (regularly, occasionally, or one-time use).
  • Storage space at a facility to house our materials and supplies.
  • Gift cards for pet food/supplies to help owners with emergency needs.
  • Gently used towels and blankets for the pets at the shelter.

Where does my donation go?

Your tax-deductible donations goes to support our many programs, including the following:

  • Spay/Neuter Rebates – rebates for sterilized animals promoting responsible pet ownership and promoting the health of cats and dogs.
  • Scholarship – scholarship for a Bay County student going into an animal-related field of study.
  • Community Outreach – financial assistance for emergency or special circumstance pet care.
  • Foster care for pets from domestic abuse situations.
  • Many other worthy activities!

How much do board members get paid?

Nothing!  Everyone associated with the Humane Society is a volunteer.

Can I volunteer?

The Humane Society is always looking for new volunteers.  Check out our Volunteer Opportunities page or attend the next board meeting to learn about current needs.  The board meets every third Thursday of the month at Animal Control.  Meetings are open to the public.

Does the Humane Society oppose hunting?

The Humane Society does not oppose hunting, but does support humane treatment of animals.

Can I get a donation box for my business?

Yes!  We’re always looking for new sites to place our attractive plastic donation boxes.  We rely upon the donations from these boxes to support our programs.  Call the Humane Society at (989) 893-0451 for more information.

Will the Humane Society speak to my group?

Yes!  We’re always delighted to offer presentations to groups about a variety of animal-related topics.  Subjects can be customized to fit your needs.  While there is no fee for the speaker, a nominal fee may be requested to cover printing and travel costs.

Why doesn’t anyone answer the phone when I call?

The Humane Society does not have a permanent location or staff.  All calls go to an answering service.  The calls are checked daily by volunteers who respond or forward the message to the appropriate person.
